Toyota Tundra Pickup Recalled for Fire Risk

The problem is due to a fuel leak; drivers may smell or see gas

Toyota is recalling over 168,000 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid pickup trucks from the 2022 and 2023 model years because a plastic fuel line may start to leak and cause a fire.

The problem is due to a plastic fuel tube that is installed near metallic brake lines. During regular driving, the plastic tube might rub up against the brake line, which could wear out the plastic and cause a fuel leak. If this happens, owners may notice the smell of gas or leaking fuel near the right rear of the vehicle.

In documents shared with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota says that the fix will come in two phases. In October dealerships will install protective materials and a clamp on the fuel tube as a temporary measure. Then, once an improved part is ready, dealerships will replace the fuel tube with a newer version. There is no estimated date for when the final fix will be available.

Toyota says that dealerships will be able to provide a loaner vehicle or alternative transportation to owners who feel uncomfortable driving their recalled Tundra while the temporary fix is being prepared.

    Toyota Tundra Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Toyota Tundra pickup trucks manufactured between Nov. 2, 2021, and July 24, 2023.
    • Toyota Tundra hybrid pickup trucks manufactured between March 15, 2022, and June 7, 2023.

The problem: A plastic fuel tube might chafe against the vehicle’s brake lines and cause a fuel leak, which could lead to a fire.

The fix: Toyota dealerships will first add protective materials and clamps to the plastic tube. Then, once replacement parts are available, dealerships will replace the fuel tube and add additional clamps. Both fixes will be free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Toyota at 800-331-4331.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V566. Toyota’s own numbers for this recall are 23TB09/23TA09.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
