Hyundai is recalling 37,997 Elantra hybrid sedans from the 2021-2023 model years because a motor control unit (MCU) software error may allow the car to move unexpectedly when the brake pedal is released. Such unexpected acceleration could result in a crash.

    more on recalls

The company is aware of 24 reported incidents, as of June 16, 2023, according to paperwork filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are no confirmed crashes or injuries related to this condition.

Hyundai advises, “Owners can continue driving these vehicles as the vehicle’s brake systems are fully operational and effective in slowing the vehicle.”

Owners will be notified by mail in mid-October 2023 to bring their vehicle to their local Hyundai dealership to be repaired.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra hybrids

The problem: A software error in the motor control unit may cause unintended vehicle acceleration after the brake pedal is released.

The fix: Dealers will update the motor control unit software, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 855-371-9460.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V589000. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 248.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
