After experiencing volatile prices at the pump last year, many shoppers are making fuel economy a top priority in selecting their next new car. But it’s important to keep performance, reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety in mind, too. These are all part of the Overall Score that Consumer Reports gives to new cars it tests, and those that shine earn our recommendation.

To help CR members, we reviewed the latest transaction data reflecting what people actually paid for cars in the past month. We then filtered the list to include only CR Recommended models that are among those with the best fuel economy for their class. In short, these are good models with good fuel economy. This list highlights models from Acura, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota. There are a variety of cars and SUVs, each representing an efficient choice in their category. And we included a standout pickup truck, as well.

We sorted the data to rank the vehicles by how close their average transaction price is to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) on the window sticker, starting with the best deal. Given the limited car inventory and heightened interest in efficient models, most sold for slightly over MSRP. That’s as good as it gets right now.
